"This masonry kitchen is placed in a small, typically Tuscan apartment with exposed bricks and beams. The client asked for an elegant, modern space but did not want to loose the original features. Clear gres tiles were used throughout, to retain the traditional character and at the same time to 'tone down' the overwhelming effect of the low vaulted roof and the archways.
The kitchen is custom-built with medium density wood and is entirely covered with white ceramic tiles like the rest of the apartment. It has a U shape with a peninsula unit at one end, which doubles as a work surface and as a table. Cupboards could not be built due to the low roof; instead we fitted a rounded shelf just above the splash-back , which we covered with the same gres tiles and decorated with a flowery pattern. An imposing masonry custom-built chimney hood was fitted on one side of the room, which also incorporated the lighting for the cooking area. Opposite to the chimney hood there is a small clay oven, again decorated with ceramic tiles. All units were completed with wooden doors and drawers painted in moss green and finished with ceramic handles. "
The result is a brignt uncluttered functional space, full of atmosphere.
